The O.W. (Bud) Hampton Archive – Conservation & Documentation Project
This archive was bequeathed to the Tracing Patterns Foundation by the Hampton Family in December 2020. It contains artifacts and documentations collected by Dr. Hampton in the Highlands of Papua (formerly named Irian Jaya) over an 18-year period (1982-1999).
There are approximately 1000 artifacts from daily and ritual lives, which include many fiber artifacts and stone tools. In addition, there are more than 20,000 color slides, 200 sounds recordings on cassette tape made in the field, and meticulous research notes.
We are taking on the task of preserving this important archive and finding a permanent home for it. We are planning a 3-year project with the following goals:
Funding is essential for this work, which will start in January 2021. We hope you will support this project by going to the Donate Page and designate your gift to the O.W. Hampton Archive.

We are taking on the task of preserving this important archive and finding a permanent home for it. We are planning a 3-year project with the following goals:
- conserve the collection
- photograph, catalog, and digitize the collections for Open Access online
- research the photographs, and original notes of Dr. Hampton
- publish an illustrated catalog that describes how the Dani people used non-loom fiber technology for bodily adornment and practical purposes, and places this type of technology–of which very few examples now survive in complete form–in its global and historical context
- find a permanent home for the collection, preferably through repatriation to Indonesia
